why hire a landscape architect?

landscape architecture is a multifaceted profession that encompasses the analysis, planning, management, stewardship, and artful design of our natural and cultural environments. And most importantly provides for the client’s health, safety and well being. Landscape architects use their technical and artistic talents to plan and design the built environment. They create drawings, construction documents, and specifications that dictate the allocation, arrangement, and construction of land elements and water resources.

In any profession there are various levels of experience and training, and the field of landscape architecture is no exception. Unfortunately there is much confusion in this field because not everyone knows the difference between a landscape designer and a landscape architect. A Landscape Architect is a state licensed design professional who holds a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in landscape architecture, has professional experience under the supervision of a licensed Landscape Architect and has passed the L.A.R.E. (Landscape Architect Registration Examination).

Practicing landscape architecture or using the title "landscape architect" without having a state license is a violation of the Landscape Architects Practice Act. Landscape architects are also trained to document design concepts and plans on paper as a visual, graphic means of communicating their designs. This is especially important for larger projects that require permitting through city planning or building departments.

In addition, landscape architects usually have more training in the design of "hardscape" features such as swimming pools, arbors, fountains, retaining walls, and other engineered nonstructural elements. Landscape architects can act as a third-party go-between between the contractor and the owner. Because they have no financial ties to the contractor or supplier, a landscape architect will dictate and support the quality of work that is in the client's best interest.

As our communities and cities prosper and grow, so does the need for consideration of our precious resources. Maintaining registration in most states requires continuous education. In doing so, Landscape Architects keep up to date on current trends and important issues.  We work with architects, planners and engineers to create sustainable places for people to live, work, and play.
